Are you planning on doing some shopping for your newborn but just aren’t sure about the things you need for a baby? Well, you’re not alone.

Many parents planning on starting a family often ask themselves the question, “What do I need to buy for a newborn baby?” The list of things to buy might seem endless. Fortunately, you don’t need anything. Here is a guide to the essentials that will be useful when your bundle of joy arrives.

Essential Stuff You May Need for a Newborn

After going through the list below, you’ll be able to shop knowledgeably. You’ll be confident when you ask yourself: what do I need for a newborn baby?

Crib

Top of the list is the baby’s bed or crib. If you’re buying in the store, ensure that the crib is especially safe for newborns and that the slats are not more than 6 cm or 2-3/8 inches apart. Alternatively, you can opt for a bassinet cradle or a three-sided crib. Avoid hand-me-down cribs, as these might not always meet modern safety standards.

Linens

Where crib linen is concerned, opt for a quilted mattress pad, several waterproof crib pads (sheet savers), a couple of crib sheets and a few lightweight blankets. Do not place stuffed animals, pillows, fluffy comforters or crib bumpers into the crib with the newborn, as there is a high risk of suffocation.

Diapers

Diapers are another must-buy. In the initial weeks, expect to change the baby 70 to 90 times each week. However, as the weeks progress, diaper changes will lessen to about 50 times per week by the sixth week. Don’t forget to purchase a changing pad, alcohol-free diaper wipes (soft washcloths work just as well), and a bin to trash soiled diapers. It’s always a good idea to have some rash cream on hand too.

Clothing

In terms of clothing, here is the basic list: seven “onesies,” four baby gowns, four swaddling blankets, two sweaters and beanies, and four pairs of booties/socks. Everything else you choose to add from here on is optional.

For Feeding

At the onset, you’ll be breastfeeding or giving formula at least  8-12 times per day. For this, you’ll need several burp cloths and or bibs. Even if you’d like to breastfeed, it’s always a wise idea to have a few bottles on hand for the times you’re unable to feed the little one by breast. You’ll also need a bottle brush to clean the bottle. Formula and its measuring cup will be key if you’re not planning on breastfeeding at all.

For Bath

Where will you bathe your little one? The adult bathtub is certainly far too big. Baby tubs are ideal as they are specifically designed for this purpose and come complete with foam padding on the inside. Buy several soft bath towels and washcloths. Don’t forget gentle baby soap, tearless shampoo, a baby brush and comb, and nail clippers.
